Eco Schools
Our Eco Committee
Our Eco-Committee (KS2) are chosen at the start of every academic year and they are at the forefront of all eco actions in our school. They make sure the job is done, the word is spread and the motivation is constant. Children in our school generally show increasing knowledge of climate change and challenges our planet is facing with it, and they bring in more and more of their own ideas about what to do to tackle that problem. The Eco-Committee regularly pick litter and look after wildlife and their habitats; in the school they make sure to remind everyone to save water and energy with their creative posters, and they even reach out to the community – cleaning the park of litter so that it is a safe and pleasant place for children and young adults to enjoy a bit of nature in the city.
Eco-Committee work closely with Gardening Club whose main job is plant life around school. Scraptoft Glorious Gardeners work almost all year round growing food in the allotment and the poly tunnel, as well as looking after the orchard. Often, they share the fruit and vegetables organically grown for small donations from the community.

Green Flag
After first achieving the Green Flag Award in 2016, we continued our good work and kept renewing it every year since. In 2024, we were awarded the Green Flag with Merit, and 2025 and 2026 Green Flag with Distinction. We are continuing to participate in the Eco-Schools nationwide project with our Eco-Committee and Glorious Gardeners, as well as all other stakeholders in school.

Scraptoft Valley Primary School Pupils Celebrate Renewal of the Eco‑Schools Green Flag with Distinction
This academic year, pupils at our school have continued to demonstrate outstanding leadership in championing sustainability and inspiring meaningful environmental action across our school and wider community. Their passion, creativity and commitment to creating positive environmental impact have once again been recognised with the award of Eco‑Schools Green Flag accreditation.
Established in 1994, the Eco‑Schools programme has spent more than 30 years inspiring and empowering young people to become environmental leaders. Today, Eco‑Schools Green Flag accreditation is awarded in more than 100 countries, reflecting the programme’s global impact. In England alone, it reaches over one million young people each year, supporting them to take meaningful action and drive positive change for our planet.
Since Scraptoft Valley Primary School began its pupil‑led sustainability journey in 2021, pupils have led a range of impactful projects, including planting a Tiny Forest, establishing an allotment and growing food, creating artwork with recycled materials, becoming a Plastic Clever School, helping the school and the local community to be litter-free, building a pond and helping wildlife to have more habitats, and many other environmental projects.
Eco-Schools England Manager, Adam Flint, said: "Young people want to create meaningful change, and they have shown they are more than capable of doing so. Their efforts deserve recognition and should act as inspiration to us all. Our planet is already feeling the effects of climate change, pollution and waste, but young people across England have shown we do not have to accept this, a more sustainable future is possible.”

Eco Warriors Club
We have had many keen Eco Warriors over the years from Foundation to Year 6. Our favourite clubs were cooking Fairtrade and organic biscuits for 'Organic September', building shelters outside in the Wild Area and building a recycled milk bottle Igloo!! The latter got a special mention in the Leicester Eco newsletter and on Twitter where it was shared by Eco schools!
