At Scraptoft Valley, we prioritise Reading because we recognise it is the key for children to access the wider curriculum. Staff actively foster a love for reading, regularly sharing and recommending a variety of books to pupils.

Children in all year groups take part in Shared Reading and Guided Reading lessons which run throughout the week. We follow a ‘linked’ approach for Shared and Guided Reading, as recommended by the Local Authority. We follow Little Wandle as our phonics scheme, which is based on Letters and Sounds.

Shared Reading lessons are delivered with a clear objective, or a ‘spotlight focus’ each time. These sessions are whole class lessons. Word reading and comprehension skills are explicitly modelled and taught during these sessions as well as reading fluency and reading with appropriate expression. During Guided Reading children have the chance to apply the spotlight strategy that they have been taught in a small group using a text that is closely matched to their current reading level.

We run a number of Reading interventions to ensure that children who fall behind are supported to make progress and catch up with their peers.
